We will be having a Venture Patrol training hike next Saturday, January 24 at Monte Sano State Park at 8AM. This is a requirement for being in the Venture Patrol, so ALL scouts who are planning on going to Sea Base need to participate as well as those who are not going to Sea Base but want to complete this requirement for VP. We prefer to do the hike only on Saturday, but if anyone absolutely cannot make it that day we can schedule another hike on Sunday the 25th.
Please reply to me and let me know if you will be at the hike on Saturday, and if you need for us to schedule one on Sunday. I will need some adults to sign up too because we need at least one besides myself to be on the hike.
This hike is a challenge (as it is supposed to be) because there is a 1 mile stretch that climbs nearly 500 feet. Here are the guidelines for the hike:
1) You MUST hike with a backpack that weighs AT LEAST 20% of your body weight (preferably 25%). For example, if you weigh 100 lbs., then your pack needs to be at least 20 lbs.
2) We will start the hike at 8AM from the hiker's parking lot near the park office. As you go into the park on Nolen Drive, go past the guard shack and the road will fork. Bear to the right and the parking lot will be immediately on the right. Be there by 7:45 to allow time to get your gear on.
3) Bring 2 liters of water, and dress appropriately for the weather. It may be cold!
4) We will end the hike at the hiker's parking lot on Monte Sano Blvd. near the Burritt Museum entrance. As you go up Monte Sano Blvd. toward the park you will see the Burritt Museum entrance on the left. The hiker's parking lot will be a few hundred feet from there on the right.
