Institutionalizing the Patrol Method

At Camp Jackson, we batted around the question, "If there was one thing that we might want to improve about the troop, what would it be?" The discussion that resulted basically boiled down to simply doing things by patrol better.

In order for that to happen, we need to think like a unit that is organized by patrol. We need to organize and carry out activities as patrols. Sit by patrols, camp by patrols, work by patrols.

Campouts

  • No PLC "patrol"
  • SPL and ASPL eat with adults so they don't have to cook
  • Troop guides camp with (tent with and eat with) their patrols and act as advisors to their Patrol Leader
  • Increase patrol campsite responsibility
  • Tenting buddies must be within the same patrol (with limited exception)
  • Posted at patrol dining fly:
    • Patrol flag
    • Duty roster, including who is acting as patrol leader for this outing
    • Menu
  • Campsite inspections by patrol
  • Awards (ribbons for patrol flags) for neatness, food, spirit, gadget, etc

Troop meetings

  • Sit by patrols at opening and closing
  • Patrol flag
  • Uniform inspections
