The Walls of Jericho overnight backpacking trip is scheduled for March 26-27. We will leave about 7:00 AM Saturday and return about 2 PM Sunday. Walls of Jericho is about a 2.5 mile backpack trip into the camp area, about 1 mile to the walls, and 6 miles out the next afternoon. Keep in mind most of the trip out goes up more than 1000 feet in elevation, so it will work your back and legs rather well while carrying a pack full of equipment. The hike out accomplishes a camping merit badge requirement.
Things to note:
1) Mr. Ken Boyd will be teaching the Geocaching Merit badge (http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Geocaching). If you can bring a GPS,
please do so. Geocaches are on the trail and at the Walls. http://www.geocaching.com/map/default.aspx?lat=34.63262&lng=-86.57348 is
a Google map showing caches
2) You will be eating and sharing meals with your tent buddy so plan dinner, breakfast, lunch, and snacks accordingly. The troop will provide
water filters and you will need to work in teams to purify water for cooking and consumption.
3) Health forms will have to be turned in by March 15.
4) There will be equipment, backpack, and health form checks the Tuesday night before the trip (3-15-11) and the PLC will be tasked with
this effort. You will not be allowed to pack more than 30% of your body weight.
5) I understand the raccoons are rampant and very educated on how to exploit camper’s food rations so bear bags will be used.
Things to do now:
1) Sign up ASAP.
2) Make sure you have good shoes and socks to hike in (preferably hiking boots)
3) Everyone should get some hiking in during the preceding weeks. Load your pack and walk around your house 40 or 50 times. If you are
fatigued, remove unessential items from your pack and try it again in 2 days. If fatigue persists, reevaluate participating in the trip.
4) Contact me for camping/event questions and Mr. Boyd for Geocaching questions.
