Philmont 2013! Revised with dates of expedition

I am very excited to announce that Troop 757 has received confirmation that we have received a tentative 2013 Philmont Expedition for 2 crews! Our expected arrival date for Philmont is June 27th, 2013; our departure date is July 9th, 2013. We now have two complete crews of scouts and adults who have signed up but we are still accepting sign-ups for those who would like to be placed on the stand-by list. Scouts must be at least First-Class rank, 14 years old, and members of the Venturing patrol prior to the date of the event. I will take reservations on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Last day to bring food and books for service project competitions!

Today is the final day to bring food and books for our Troop 757 Inner City Food Drive and LIFT Reading and Literacy Book Drive! Please bring all of your food items and books to tonight’s meeting. We will accept items after tonight but after tonight’s meeting they will no longer count towards the patrol competitions. As of now the Warriors patrol has a very healthy lead for the food drive and the Cobra patrol is in the lead for the book drive. Let’s step-up this competition and give these two patrols a run for their money!

Scouting Heritage Campfire Program at Redstone Village Retirement Community

Scouts

We have been invited to visit with retired men at the Redstone Village Retirement Home this Friday from 4 to 6. We will participate in their "Men in Hats" program. These men gather every Friday to talk and share stories about the good ol' days. By being there in our Class A uniforms, we hope to get them talking about their days as a scout. We will do a simple "campfire" program in the lobby follow by conversation and s'mores. I think you will find this experience very rewarding.

Talakto District Fall Camporee

The Talakto District Fall Camporee is this Friday, November 11. Cost is $25 per Scout, including late registration and food. The theme is "A Salute to Veterans" and goes quite nicely with our activity we will have just completed, the Veteran's Day Parade and Memorial Dedication.

Because of the short time until the event, full PLC coordination was not possible.

This should be a fun campout with interesting displays of camp life during the Korean War and Vietnam War, cooking competitions and a flag retirement.

Siege of Mafeking

In 1899, war broke out between the British Empire and the Boer Republic of South Africa. Unable to convince the British government to send troops, Colonel Robert Baden-Powell was sent to raise an army from among British settlers and to dissuade the local population from siding with the Boers.

It is now feared that President Krueger of the Boer Republic will attempt to lay siege to the town of Mafeking, where Baden-Powell has his headquarters.

Veterans Day Parade and Memorial Dedication

We have been given an opportunity to help with the dedication of the new Veterns Memorial downtown. We need Scouts in their complete uniform to help seat dignitaries and guests starting around 9:45 the morning of the 11th of November. We will need PLC members to be there the evening of the 10th to learn the program and pass to their patrol members the next morning.

After the dedication, we will head to the marshalling yard to march in the parade.

More details will be coming, but please go ahead and sign up so we can get an idea of how many are coming.

Thanks,
Ken Boyd
