What Does it Take To Be Successful? Jan 26th Scoutmaster's Minute

During the Outback Bowl, I heard Lou Holtz discussing what it takes to be successful on his ESPN segment entitled Dr. Lou. I don’t always agree with Coach Holtz's football prognostications but he was once a very good football coach and he is still a very good inspirational speaker. When he was a football coach, Lou took great pride in teaching young men to be great athletes, citizens, and gentlemen. In his Ask Dr. Lou segment, he identified three keys to success in life. Some of these will be very familiar to Scouts.

What Is Your New Year's Resolution?

Well it's a new year and I always like to set some goals and resolutions. While watching the news one morning, I heard Carl Rove say he set a goal of reading at least one book a week in 2010. That's a great goal so I have decided to do that myself and I've challenged my family and the Scouts to do the same thing. (BTW -- audio books count). So far I have completed "Uncommon" by Tony Dungy, "The Teeth of The Tiger," by Tom Clancy, and "Eat That Frog," By Brian Tracy. I'll update the list each week as I complete another book.

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader

I cannot overemphasize to you the importance of becoming a trained leader. As Baden Powell once said, “Every Scout deserves a Trained Leader!” We have a large Troop and it is vital that we have a large group of trained leaders. If you have recently joined the Troop, you may be wondering how you can get involved. When I first joined, I felt the same way. I wanted to help but I did not know what to do and no one had the time to spoon feed it to me.

Interested in serving in a Leadership Position in the Troop?

Every boy deserves a trained leader. Trained leaders stay with the program longer and boys stay involved in the program longer when they have trained leaders. Your Troop, Troop 757 has over 81 scouts in the unit. They need men like you to stand up alonside your scout and help in the Troop! This email is for you! Talakto will conduct leader specific training for all Boy Scout leader positions on Saturday, September 26. This training will be conducted at Holy Spirit Catholic School on Airport Road in Huntsville.

Scouts should arrive at 1:30 PM to help with preparations. Scouts should be in full dress Class A uniform including OA or Merit Badge sashes.
